Unlike other categories at the BAFTA film awards, this award is special as it is decided by public vote, making it a significant recognition of popular appeal.
This year marks the 20th edition of the Rising Star award, and the latest lineup of nominees features some of the most exciting names that have made waves in cinema over the past year. Amongst these talented individuals are Marisa Abela for her role in “Back to Black,” Jharrel Jerome for his performance in “Unstoppable,” David Jonsson for his work in “Alien: Romulus,” Mikey Madison for her portrayal in “Anora,” and Nabhaan Rizwan for his contribution to “In Camera.” Notably, three out of these five nominees – Abela, Jonsson, and Rizwan – have shared screen time in the TV series “Industry.”
The announcement ceremony took place at London’s iconic Savoy Hotel and was conducted by Jack O’Connell, a previous recipient of the Rising Star award himself. The award holds significance beyond just recognizing talent; it pays tribute to Mary Selway, a revered casting director known for discovering and promoting new talents.
BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip emphasized how this award celebrates storytelling, creativity, and innovation in film while honoring Mary Selway’s legacy. The nominees represent a diverse range of gifted individuals whose work has captivated audiences worldwide with its depth and artistry.
Looking back at previous winners like Daniel Kaluuya, Tom Holland, Letitia Wright, John Boyega, James McAvoy, and Tom Hardy showcases how this accolade has been a stepping stone for many actors towards greater success. Last year’s winner was Mia McKenna-Bruce from “How to Have Sex,” setting high expectations for Abela, Jonsson, and Rizwan as they compete for this coveted title.
