Alan Cummings Journey Transforming Pitlochry Theatre with Passion and Vision

Alan Cumming, known for his roles in popular TV shows like The Traitors US and The Good Wife, found himself embarking on a new adventure that would lead him back to his roots in Highland Perthshire. It was during the filming of Channel 4’s All Aboard Scotland’s Poshest Trains that he crossed paths with Elizabeth Newman at Pitlochry Festival Theatre. Little did he know, this encounter would set the stage for a significant turning point in his career.

“I was filming an episode…and we came to the theatre…she asked if I’d ever thought about running a theatre,”

Alan recalls, reflecting on the serendipitous moment that planted the seed for what was to come next.

It wasn’t long before Alan, with his extensive background in Broadway and film, decided to take a leap of faith and apply for the position when it became available. Despite splitting his time between Scotland and New York, where he resides with his husband Grant Schaffer, Alan felt a deep connection to the theatre’s mission of sharing Pitlochry with the world.

“I have been living partly here for years…I was very honest…about what I could offer…What really excited me was the theatre’s mantra,”

Alan shares passionately as he delves into his motivations for taking on this new role.

The announcement of Alan Cumming as the new face of Pitlochry Festival Theatre took many by surprise but also brought renewed attention to this cultural gem nestled in Highland Perthshire. Clad in his unmistakable tartan plaid, Alan saw this as an opportunity to shine a spotlight on Pitlochry and elevate its presence on the global stage.

“I know I have experience…but being well known is also important. This helps raise profile,”

Alan explains, recognizing the impact of his celebrity status on garnering support and interest for the theatre’s endeavors.

Much like how Nicola Benedetti’s appointment as director of the Edinburgh International Festival bolstered visibility and advocacy for the arts community, Alan aims to use his platform not only to showcase his talent but also to champion causes close to his heart.

As plans take shape for upcoming seasons at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Alan hints at an eclectic mix of performances that blend tradition with innovation. From Shakespearean classics to avant-garde productions, he envisions a lineup that will captivate audiences while pushing boundaries creatively.

“Theatre is entertaining but it’s also about being challenging and provoking…It’s exciting for me as I want to do things I like but also bring new people in. I’m kind of like the Pied Piper of Pitlochry,”

Alan muses whimsically, painting a picture of inclusivity and artistic diversity under his stewardship.

With aspirations of seeing productions from Pitlochry grace Broadway stages one day, Alan approaches his role with determination and zeal. His vision extends beyond just putting on plays; he aims to transform theatres into vibrant community hubs where people can gather, share stories, and forge connections.

Sitting amidst the beauty of Highland Perthshire, gazing out at Ben-y-Vrackie looming majestically in the distance, Alan feels a sense of purpose driving him forward. The magic woven into Pitlochry’s landscape fuels his desire to open up this enchanting world to all who seek inspiration and joy through theatrical experiences.

In this tale of reinvention and passion rekindled, Alan Cumming emerges as not just a seasoned actor but as a beacon lighting up the path towards a future where art knows no bounds. As he immerses himself in shaping a new chapter for Pitlochry Festival Theatre, one thing becomes clear – under his guidance, the stage is set for transformation unlike any other.
