Inspiring Young Tech Innovators: The Eco Coding Adventure at St Gregory’s Primary School

An Immersive Day of Eco-Friendly Coding Education

In a bid to ignite the passion for technology innovation and environmental consciousness, St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate hosted an interactive event called the ‘Eco Coding Adventure’. Facilitated by Get With The Program, this initiative targeted students from Year 1 to Year 4, blending coding education with environmental awareness.

The event kicked off with an engaging assembly-style performance featuring Professor Trice and AL the Robot, complemented by a video message from a coding expert. Through various entertaining tasks, children delved into coding concepts while simultaneously gaining insights into waste reduction and recycling practices.

Empowering Young Minds through Hands-On Learning

During the event, younger participants were actively involved in programming activities that required them to follow simple instructions. This hands-on approach helped them grasp basic algorithms effectively. On the other hand, older students honed their skills in the ICT suite by utilizing platforms like Scratch to bring their creative ideas to fruition.

Rachel Farawi, Key Stage 1 leader, praised the event’s innovative approach and highlighted how follow-up activities were provided to reinforce learning and encourage skill development among the children. Head Teacher Dave Walker emphasized the significance of connecting tech education with environmental awareness, citing how it enriched students’ understanding of recycling and sustainability while enhancing their technological proficiency.
