OpenAI’s Sora video generator is launching for ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscribers — but not in the EU – TechCrunch

OpenAI has announced the launch of its video generator, Sora, for subscribers to the ChatGPT Pro and Plus plans. The release of Sora Turbo allows users to create video clips ranging from 5 to 20 seconds in various aspect ratios and resolutions. Despite being in its early stages, OpenAI believes Sora will significantly enhance human creativity. The system offers features like generating multiple video variations from text prompts, editing existing videos, creating sequences, blending videos, and more.

However, Sora faced capacity issues shortly after its launch, impacting user experience. Users are required to have credits to generate videos with Sora, with costs varying based on resolution and duration. The ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans offer between 1,000 and 10,000 credits per month, with different pricing tiers for video generation.

ChatGPT Plus plans include credits for “priority videos,” while Pro plans offer additional benefits like unlimited low-priority videos without watermarks. Users can adjust data control settings to disable OpenAI’s training on new Sora videos. Notably, Sora is not available in the EU initially, with OpenAI working towards expanding its availability in the region.

The launch of Sora follows a trend where tech companies like Meta and Microsoft have faced delays in releasing AI products in the EU due to complex data privacy regulations. OpenAI’s event, “12 Days of OpenAI,” introduces Sora amid leaked access to the video generator, raising concerns about fairness and compensation for early testers.

As the tech industry continues to evolve, the introduction of innovative AI products like Sora showcases the ongoing advancements in visual generation technology.
