OpenAI’s Sora video generator is launching for ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscribers — but not in the EU – TechCrunch

OpenAI is rolling out its video generator, Sora, for subscribers of the ChatGPT Pro and Plus plans, starting today. Named Sora Turbo, this version can create videos ranging from 5 to 20 seconds in various aspect ratios and resolutions. Despite its imperfections, OpenAI believes Sora will significantly enhance human creativity. Early users like video blogger Marques Brownlee have praised Sora’s capabilities, such as generating video clips from text prompts or images and offering editing tools like a Re-mix feature, Storyboard interface, Blend tool, Loop, and Re-cut options.

However, Sora faced capacity issues shortly after its launch. To use Sora, subscribers need credits, with costs varying based on video resolution and duration. ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans provide different credit allowances that reset monthly. Plus plans offer 1,000 credits for up to 50 priority videos at 720p and 5 seconds, while Pro plans include 10,000 credits for up to 500 priority videos at 1080p and 20 seconds.

Notably, Sora videos come with watermarks by default, but users can disable OpenAI’s training on new videos by adjusting settings. Unfortunately, Sora is currently unavailable in the EU, with OpenAI citing regulatory challenges as the reason for the delay in launching in European countries.

Similar to other tech companies, OpenAI’s product releases have been impacted by the EU’s stringent data privacy regulations. This delay mirrors Meta and Microsoft’s struggles with launching AI products in the EU due to compliance issues. The rollout of Sora comes after a group leaked access to the video generator, criticizing OpenAI for alleged deception and inadequate compensation for early testers.

In other news, OpenAI’s end-of-year event, “12 Days of OpenAI,” is underway, offering daily insights into the company’s latest developments. The tech industry continues to evolve rapidly, with companies like Spotify, Bluesky, and troubled electric truckmaker Nikola making headlines with their latest innovations and challenges.
