In the dynamic landscape of initial public offerings (IPOs), Hong Kong is poised to shine brightly in 2025, reclaiming its position among the top 10 global ranking. The year holds great promise with industry leaders like EV battery manufacturer CATL and condiment producer Foshan Haitian gearing up to launch their IPOs on the vibrant stage of Hong Kong’s stock market.
Reflecting on the achievements of the past year, companies and investors successfully raised a substantial US$11 billion through 64 first-time stock offerings on Hong Kong’s main board. This impressive feat positioned Hong Kong as the fifth busiest IPO venue globally, trailing behind India’s primary exchanges, Nasdaq, and New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) which secured top positions on the league table.
The competitive landscape of global IPO venues saw Tokyo, Saudi Exchange, Abu Dhabi, Madrid, and Shenzhen’s ChiNext board rounding up the prestigious top 10 list alongside Hong Kong. Noteworthy spikes were observed in proceeds from Hong Kong IPOs which surged by an impressive 87% compared to the previous year. The momentum was further fueled by landmark deals such as Midea Group’s monumental HK$35.6 billion (US$4.6 billion) transaction in September – standing as the world’s second-largest IPO in 2024.
In assessing these developments, industry experts like Louis Wong, Executive Director of Phillip Capital Management acknowledged that it had been a “satisfactory” year for IPO activities. Looking forward with optimism into the upcoming year, Wong projected continued success driven by favorable policies from mainland Chinese regulators and a conducive interest rate environment.
For IPO bankers who navigated through challenges earlier in 2024 when rankings dipped to a two-decade low at 13th place, there is a sense of relief and renewed hope on the horizon.
