Unveiling Sarawaks Stance on Rare Earth Elements Mining: A Strategic Environmental Approach

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg Delivers Insights

In a recent statement, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg shed light on the state’s position regarding rare earth elements (REE) mining. Despite being among the top 10 states in Malaysia with substantial REE deposits, Sarawak has opted against prioritizing REE extraction as a primary industry. Emphasizing the environmental impact of such activities, Abang Johari highlighted the state government’s commitment to promoting a green economy agenda.

Abang Johari articulated that while Sarawak acknowledges its potential for REE mining, careful consideration must be given to the detrimental effects on the environment. He expressed reservations about rushing into REE mining without conducting thorough studies to assess and mitigate environmental risks. The premier underscored the importance of diversifying economic activities rather than solely focusing on resource extraction.

During a groundbreaking ceremony for the Che Hia Khor Kidney Foundation Moral Uplifting Society’s medical and commercial building project in Kuching, Abang Johari addressed reporters, reiterating Sarawak’s cautious approach towards REE mining. The premier emphasized the need for comprehensive research and planning before venturing into any large-scale mining operations.

According to reports from the Department of Minerals and Geosciences Malaysia (JMG), ten states in Malaysia have been identified as having significant potential for REEs, including Terengganu, Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Selangor, and Sarawak. These states collectively hold an estimated value of RM809.6 billion in REE resources.

Sarawak’s stance reflects a strategic environmental approach that prioritizes sustainable development and considers long-term ecological impacts. By refraining from immediate exploitation of its natural resources without proper evaluation and safeguards in place, Sarawak aims to balance economic growth with environmental conservation.

In conclusion, Sarawak’s decision not to prioritize rare earth element mining underscores its commitment to responsible resource management and sustainable development practices. Through deliberate planning and environmental considerations, the state seeks to navigate its economic growth trajectory while safeguarding its natural heritage for future generations.
