Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati’s Visit to Southern Lebanon Amid Israel-Hezbollah Ceasefire

Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, embarked on a significant visit to southern Lebanon on Monday. This key visit comes in the wake of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, aiming to bring stability to the region following weeks of conflict.

Support for Lebanese Troops and UNIFIL

During his visit, Prime Minister Mikati took the opportunity to tour Lebanese troops positions and U.N. peacekeeper posts in southern Lebanon. He met with UNIFIL commanders and commended the role played by the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). His first stop was at a Lebanese army barracks where he emphasized the importance of Israeli troops withdrawing from Lebanon to enable the Lebanese military to effectively carry out its duties.

Ceasefire Agreement Details

The ceasefire agreement dictates that as Israeli and Hezbollah forces pull back, Lebanese troops are set to deploy in southern Lebanon. The incursion of Israeli troops into Lebanon at the end of September marked a significant escalation in tensions, with efforts aimed at pushing Hezbollah away from the border.

Focus on Gaza Conflict

Following the ceasefire with Hezbollah, Israeli forces shifted their focus towards combating Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Recent reports from Gaza medics indicated casualties resulting from Israeli airstrikes, raising concerns about civilian safety amidst ongoing hostilities.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

U.N. humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher expressed alarm over continued strikes by Israeli forces on densely populated areas in Gaza. He highlighted challenges faced in delivering aid due to restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities and criminal activities within Gaza hindering humanitarian efforts.

The situation remains precarious as clashes persist between various factions while civilians bear the brunt of escalating violence. Prime Minister Mikati’s visit underscores efforts towards peace and stability while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics shaping events in the region.
