‘Phone ban sparks increased social interaction among students’

Imagine a school where the sound of laughter and conversations fills the air during break times instead of the usual silence interrupted only by the tapping of phone screens. That’s exactly what happened at Burnage Academy for Boys in Manchester after implementing a mobile phone ban almost 12 years ago. Associate Assistant Head Teacher, Greg Morrison, expressed how this decision had a profound impact on student behavior and engagement within the school premises.

“There was one less distraction in the classroom,” Morrison observed.

In October, all schools across England received government advice to restrict mobile phone usage during school hours. While many institutions were just beginning to address this issue, Burnage Academy had already taken decisive action more than a decade prior. According to Dr. Louise Black from the University of Manchester’s School of Education, ongoing discussions about digital literacy and safety are crucial in navigating these changes effectively.

“It’s important to keep having conversations about digital literacy and staying safe,” Dr. Black emphasized.

Morrison noted that banning phones led to increased engagement among students in class activities. By eliminating this distraction throughout the day, including break times, students were encouraged to interact more with their peers. Instead of being glued to their screens like many young people elsewhere, Burnage pupils could be seen playing sports, chatting animatedly, and sharing meals together during lunch breaks.

“We have seen a big impact in terms of engagement in class,” Morrison stated.

Year 11 student Logan shared his positive experience with the ban as it helped him stay focused without unnecessary interruptions. Another student named Lucas highlighted how he enjoys spending time conversing with friends throughout lunch breaks rather than being engrossed in his phone screen.

“Me and my mates, we just talk to each other for the whole lunch,” Lucas remarked.

Dr. Black acknowledged that mobile phones play a significant role in young people’s lives today, serving various purposes beyond mere communication. While some educators find them beneficial for educational apps and tools inside classrooms, she emphasized that each school environment is unique and requires tailored approaches.

“Phones are very much part of young people’s lives,” Dr. Black explained.

The autonomy granted by government guidelines enables schools to establish their own policies regarding mobile device usage on campus—a freedom that acknowledges varying needs across educational settings.
