Aziza “Z” Barnes, a talented poet and writer known for their work on the FX drama “Snowfall” and Netflix’s “Teenage Bounty Hunters,” passed away at the young age of 32. Their family confirmed that Barnes died by suicide on December 15, leaving behind a profound impact on the literary and entertainment world.
Originating from Los Angeles, Barnes held a BFA from New York University and was pursuing an MFA at the University of Mississippi. Beyond their screenwriting achievements, Barnes was recognized as a distinguished poet, having been honored as both a Callaloo Fellow and Poet’s House Fellow.
Safia Elhillo, a close friend of Barnes, expressed her grief in a heartfelt tribute where she described them as a “brilliant writer” whose departure has left the community in mourning. Elhillo shared a poignant poem titled “Eulogy for Her” penned by Barnes, illustrating their profound talent that will be sorely missed.
In addition to their
notable
contributions to “Snowfall” and “Teenage Bounty Hunters,” Barnes had future projects lined up including involvement in the upcoming “Game of Thrones” prequel series “Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” slated for release in 2025, as well as Max’s hip-hop drama “Rap Sh!t.”
